Stringing is a very personal thing and most players have their favourites from the various materials
and manufacturers available. I can obtain and supply most string types, but I do not carry large
stocks and therefore leave the selling of strings to others. Please have a look at the
links page. For some suppliers.
As standard I supply synthetic strings For most of my instruments. Aquila nylgut For
the trebles and Kürschner KN series copper wound strings For the basses. The exception
to this is usually the guitars which I tend to string in gut apart from the top string which
is usually nylgut.
I am, of course, happy to supply strings to the customers preference when making a new instrument.
I can also give advise if you are wishing to experiment with different string types.
Below are a number of example string sets For various different instruments.
My instruments come with similar stringing unless customers express their own preferences.
It is important not to stray far from the recommended string tensions, whatever material is used,
since this can impose greater stresses on the instrument which could be damaging in the long term.
Please Note that these string sets, while not being unusual for authentically made instruments,
can only be recommended for my own instruments. In general, it is always best to get advice
from the maker of the instrument you are stringing. He or she will know what kind of tensions the
instrument can handle. Always remember that lutes are often very lightly made and over stringing
can cause serious problems.
You may find my StringCalc program useful if you have several
instruments or if you like to experiment.
